Upper endoscopy (also known as "EGD") is utilized as a form of screening for patients with long-standing heartburn, chest pain or regurgitation. We also utilize EGD for diagnosing and treating stomach ulcers, bleeding and abdominal pain. Colon cancer generally arises from colon polyps. Hence, a screening colonoscopy after age 50 in average risk individuals can effectively reduce your risk of developing colon cancer. In general, indications for gastrointestinal endoscopy is diverse and highly patient specific.
